Here is the list of classes that we currently have scheduled. Keep in mind that the majority of these classes are going to be HANDS ON! Once we get the course descriptions, please take note of the classes so that you know what you will have to bring with you. Also, do not forget, once the registrations are ready, you will be receiving a confirmation of registration, this confirmation must be presented when picking up your packet, so do not lose it! This is very important, please read everything as it is added.

Safe Manipulation - 3 days - Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

 Prerequisite to this class is a combination lock servicing course or the equivalent. This is not an introductory course. Students should have a thorough knowledge of servicing safe locks and combination changing including correct terminology and functioning of each component within a modern safe lock.

This course will include a brief review of mechanical combination locks including the theory of operation, determining the number of wheels, and how to determine the manufacturer. Methods to determine if a lock should be manipulated will be presented. The art of manipulation will be displayed in a step by step process to give the students the tools to become proficient in the highest art of locksmithing. There will be extensive hands-on practice of Group 2 locks. An in depth use of lock diagnostics will be discussed as a tool for aiding manipulation.

Tools to bring to class: #2 Phillips Screwdriver, medium size Flathead Screwdriver, Diagonal Pliers, pencil and paper for notes.

Basic Electricity (with Detex) - 2 days -  Wednesday and Thursday

Detex Certification - 1 day - Friday

 Basic Electricity will be covered on two days, Wednesday and Thursday.

Day 1. - Electricity for Door Hardware - This portion of the class covers the principals and equipment to assembl basic electrical circuits for door hardware applications. Topics include:

  1. Theory of electricity
  2. Terminology
  3. Products
  4. Circuit construction and
  5. Associated diagrams and paperwork

Bring safetyglasses, four way screw driver, 1/8 regular screwdriver, wire stripper, and a pencil and lots of writing paper.

Detex products will be used as reference items in system development. Attendees wishing to have specific products covered in this section should contact the instructor in advance with product information. If time permits and the products are in the scope of the class; every effort wille made to cover requested items.

Day 2. Specifying and Wiring Electrical Door Hardware - This hands-on session applies the practical side of electrical door hardware. Topis include:

  1. Developing the circuit
  2. Documenting the circuit
  3. Wiring the circuit
  4. Testng the circuit, and
  5. Training the owner on circuit operation.

Bring safety glasses, four way screwdriver, 1/8 regula screwdriver, wire stripper, needle nose pliers, a pencil and lots of paper.

Detex Certification - 1 day

Detex Product Installation - This hands-on session covers:

  1. Detex complete line of electro mechanical Loss Prevention and Exit Hardware products. a) Exit Control Locks, b) Value Series Exit Devices and c) Premium Exit Device Advantex Devices
  2. Detex simplified installation systems including the Patented Mouning Plate and Strike Locator System.
  3. Retrofitting Detex Advantex Series into competitor's door preps.
  4. Adding field options to the Detex Exit Devices

Bring safety glasses, four way screwdriver, 1/8 regular screwdriver, hex wrenches, pliers, pencil and paper.

Master Keying/IC Core - 1 day - Wednesday

 In this class, we will go over progression and bitting array and how they work with the charts provided. We will explain where master keys come from. Then, we will write the charts and pin cores and if time allows, re-pin the cores. Students will get to keep the charts and pin kits that are provided by LAB. This is a hands-on class, you will be doing the pinning, capping and using the tools.

Basic Locksmithing 102 (Installations) - 2 days - Thursday and Friday

 On the first day, we will work on cabinet lock choice and explain the various kinds of doors and drawers. Everybody will have a chance to install a cabinet door lock and drawer lock. The second day, we will work on door locks. We will work with jigs as well as install freehand from Kwikset to Simplex, from knob lock to panic device. Bring tools and plan to get dirty. The types of tools you should bring with you are: hand tools, hammer, chisel, drill.

Life Safety (lecture) - 1 day- Wednesday

 This class is going to cover the rules and laws of ADA/Life Safety codes. Make sure to bring plenty of paper and pens/pencils to take notes. There is a lot of information in this class. It is great as a refresher as well as the new locksmith just learning what to look for and what to know when selling hardware. This is not a hands-on class.

Impressioning - 1 day - Thursday

 Students taking this class should bring with them the following tools: Pippin and/or round files (ex: 4" #2), gripping tools, magnifying aides, shop towels and micrometers.

Lock picking - 1 day - Friday

 This hands-on interactive laboratory session will cover both pin- and disc- tumbler locks commonly found throughout the US today. We will explore characteristics inherent in cylinder manufacture, keyway design, picking tool configuration, and skill level of the lock picker. We will take the benefits of those four universes and meld them into a set of skills. We will then hone those skills into a rhythm of practice, resulting in repeatable verifiable openings. Bring your favorite pick(sets).

AutoTech  - 2 days - Wednesday, Thursday

 Remotes 101 - No Computer Required

This course is a practical hands-on approach to correctly identify, price and program Factory OEM and After-Market replacement remotes. This class will discuss why you should sell remotes. We will also discuss the alternative methods when the remote is no longer available. Through hands on each student  will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to increase their profits by using tried and proven methods of sales techniques and marketing strategies. The student  will have an opportunity to ask questions about remotes and alarms. So...STOP sending your customer to the dealer and keep the profit for yourself.

Medeco 3 Certification - 1 day -  Friday

 The Medeco 3 certification class lasts approximately 8 hours and covers the design and operation of door hardware cylinders and cam locks for the Original, Biaxial and Medeco 3 technologies. Hands on exercises include: disassembly and assembly of a Medeco 3 mortise cylinder, decoding a Medeco 3 key cut to biaxial specifications, pinning and master pinning a mortise cylinder to a change key and master key and pinning a cam lock plug to a sample key. Matrix master key chart reading, application of the MACS, specialty tools, lubrication, trouble shooting, key control programs, interchangeable core pinning specifications and an overview of the product line are also covered.

This class is a basic to intermediate course and is designed for locksmtihs who are just starting to work with Medeco locks or for locksmiths who have Medeco servicing experience and want to receive factory certification. Locksmiths or end users who attend the class should have a basic understanding of how a common pin tumbler lock works and have experience in pinning a common pin tumbler cylinder. A basic understanding of master keying terminology is also helpful.

Students who successfully complete a written test will receive a certificate suitable for framing. All students will receive a Medeco 3 key decoder, technical manual, Medeco pen, note pad and screwdriver.

This class has been approved for 1 point toward the ALOA PRP Recertification requirements.
